Susannah Maiken

Shriver Corps Program Fellow

Chicago, IL

Susannah serves as a Shriver Corp Program Fellow through AmeriCorps VISTA. She helps implement Constituent Voice as well as analyze current programs in the Chicago office. Additionally, she is in charge of community partnerships and outreach to ensure that members are always receiving the resources that they need.  Prior to this year, Susannah served as Site Coordinator in the Chicago Pilsen office, where she was in charge of daily office management, advocate management and community partnerships and outreach.

Susannah LIFTs for the students she served in City Year. While her job was to tutor 6th graders, she was struck by the deeper issues that were present in her students’ lives. Many students did not know where their next meal was coming from or where they were going to sleep that night.  Through LIFT, she hopes to help families, like those she served in City Year, find the resources they need so that their children can have the opportunity to focus on just being a kid.

Susannah graduated in 2012 with a major in Psychology from Lawrence University, in Appleton, WI. While at Lawrence, she got involved with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, which inspired her to become further involved in community service. Senior year, she took a position with the Lawrence University Volunteer and Community Service Center as the Events Coordinator, planning large scale events, such as the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.  After graduation, Susannah accepted a position with City Year Seattle, an AmeriCorps program that places Corps Members in low income schools to help keep students on track for graduation through targeted intervention in attendance, behavior and course work.
